In the book, Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser, the word “Uniformity” has been repeated many times in his book. The key to success of Macdonald’s, one of the first fast food restaurants established in the early days, is the adoption of “Uniformity”. The chain stores of Macdonald’s all strive to offer the exact same products and services as of other stores. It is human nature to be drawn by familiar brands or products to avoid the unknown that was one of the reasons why Macdonald’s have been so successful till today. In order to obtain “uniformity” throughout the food chain, suppliers of meat (beef patties, poultry), potatoes, burgers, engineering of food flavors have been consolidated to a limited number of companies. Even the details of preparing the different kinds of food in the kitchen were not overlooked. Each kitchen staff is trained to do one task throughout the whole food preparation. This process of “uniformity” was first used in auto industry production line and it was then adopted by the founding fathers of Macdonald’s in their food preparations.
